I have planted the majority of the spring veggies. I still have peppers, okra, corn, some beans, and amaranth to go. With the addition of my 5 new beds I have the luxury this year of still having winter veggies in the garden as well. It has been so nice to have the extra space.
Here’s my beginning of April update.
Here’s the gross photos mentioned in the title. While mixing up the melon bed, I found one larva, then another, then another until finally I had a pile of 32. Each of these are about 3 inches long. They are usually found in compost piles, but for some reason they loved this bed. Maybe because I didn’t clean out the old pepper plants from last year soon enough? There were enough to put some in my compost pile, some in the leaf pile, and the rest off to the chickens.
Wow, that’s quite an impressive veggie assortment! I’m most jealous of the peas though. I didn’t grow them this year and fresh garden peas are to die for. I definitely need to follow your lead and put in more beds. There’s never enough space in my garden for everything I want to grow.
This is my first year having any success with peas. They are so good I rarely get them inside before eating them. Since you have the space, I would definitely recommend more beds. Just add a few every season.
I love all the pics. Everything looks so awesome!
Thanks! Can’t wait til everything’s ready to eat 🙂
Haha – Clicked on this solely due to the title promising a gross photo. That was a photo of tasty chicken treats. When we dig up grubs we have to save them up until we have enough for all the girls or there are nasty fights…must be tasty!
Most of the chickens are scared of those grubs.
Most of the chickens are scared of them so the bravest one wins
While they are gross, and tasty chicken favorites, save some for the compost. They become rhono beetles and both larvea and beetle are good for the compost. The longer the horn on the males, the healthier they are during growth. Make good pets too, they can live a year or two if well cared for
Howdy. Ever find more beetle larvae?
Yep, quite often. I’ve found the beetles too
Cool! Is there any way we could get one (or a few)? My son(6) is really into bugs and would love to have a rhino beetle. His birthday is April 1st.
I haven’t seen any since last summer. I’ll let you know if I find more
