Eric is in the process of getting a new shop built. I should reap some benefits, starting with 2 new beehives! I asked the concrete guys to please leave me the rocks that they were digging up.

They obliged.

It’s hard to see the scale, but maybe these next pics will help. The two of us, with the help of a dolly, moved several rocks to my front bed. We didn’t even put a dent in the pile.

Monarchs and Bees

IMG_1111

Yesterday I dug up this season’s sweet potatoes. I nearly filled a 50 gallon bucket, and figured I got about 100 pounds worth.

It took about 2 hours of digging, since I had to carefully dig around to find them, and then pry them out without breaking them.

While digging, I heard the bees buzzing around the thai basil, one of their favorites. They are frantically preparing for winter, and there were dozens of bees.

Although I planted 9 tropical milkweed plants for the Monarchs, they seem to prefer the native frost weed. I was able to spot these beauties in the back yard, in a shaded spot under the cedar and live oaks.

Here’s a few more of my favorite photos …

New Flower Bed

IMG_4555

Summer is winding down, and my computer situation is all fixed, so time to start blogging again.

I’ve been unhappy with the back yard. It just needed something. I thought about a patio, but after having my ideas priced out, I realized that wasn’t a good option. Also, I wanted to stick with a natural look. I had been expanding the beds around the trees, but they still just seemed undersized. Finally I decided to connect all of the beds together.

I also added different sections of stepping stones. The Great Outdoors recently starting stocking these great aggregate stones in various shapes/sizes.

The turkeys flew over the fence to  critique my mulching technique.

Of course Carl wasn’t to be left out of the fun.

I’m also edging out the iris bed to fully enclose the grass.

This section still needs to be weeded and stepping stones added.
